Paul Groothuis

Paul Groothuis

Sound Designer

Paul Groothuis was born in Holland and studied Stage Management at the Central School of Speech and Drama.

Between 1984 and 2003, he has designed sound for over 140 National Theatre productions including Present Laughter, Rafta Rafta, The Rose Tattoo, The Man of Mode, The Life of Galileo, The Royal Hunt of the Sun, Once in a Lifetime, Henry IV Parts 1 & 2, The House of Bernarda Alba, His Dark Materials, Buried Child, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way to the Forum, Stuff Happens, Cyrano, Henry V, Edmond, A Streetcar Named Desire, Love's Labour's Lost, The Coast of Utopia, The Wind in the Willows, The Shaughraun, Flight, All My Sons, The Night of the Iguana, Under Milk Wood, Summerfolk and The Cherry Orchard.

Musicals at the NT include Sunday in the Park With George, Sweeney Todd, A Little Night Music, Lady in the Dark, Guys and Dolls, Candide, and Trevor Nunn's South Pacific, Oklahoma!, My Fair Lady and Anything Goes.

Co-designs with Mike Walker include Carousel at the National, the West End and Tokyo, and Oliver! at the London Palladium.

Since leaving the NT and most recently: Matthew Bourne's Nutcracker! Highland Fling, and Edward Scissorhands and Carman, and CoisCeim's Mermaids. In the West End: Porgy and Bess, Bad Girls the Musical, Endgame and Bent.

Future projects include Marianne Dreams at the Almeida and Gone with the Wind with Trevor Nunn.  Paul is a visiting lecturer at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. He is also an associate to the National's Sound Department and Sound Consultant for the Kingston Theatre.
