Set up by the Theatre Royal in 1998 to give young people the chance to learn from and be inspired by leading artists from theatre, film and TV, the hugely successful Masterclass programme has now welcomed over 40,000 people aged 17-30. Events are given free of charge and occur at least one Friday a month throughout the year, focusing on acting and performance as well as directing, writing and producing.
In a unique partnership and to coincide with our 10th anniversary, Masterclass will create and run a new apprentice programme for members to work alongside Artistic Director Jonathan Kent and his production team in the Theatre Royal Haymarket Company. This initiative provides a vital first opportunity for talented young people to enter the industry.
Led by Patrons Peter Hall, David Hare and Maureen Lipman, past Masters have included Alan Ayckbourn, Cicely Berry, Ruthie Henshall, Kwame Kwei-Armah, Mike Leigh, Adrian Lester, Helen Mirren, Bill Nighy, Alan Rickman and Tom Stoppard. Events in 2007 have so far been given by Lindsay Duncan, Jonathan Miller, Charles Dance, Bill Paterson, Rufus Norris, Richard Wilson, Dominic Cooke and Maxine Peake.
Masterclass is a registered charity and exists through the kind support of the Haymarket, individual donors and sponsors including Freixenet, Ticketmaster, The Stage and The Hilton in the Community Foundation.
