Star of One Man Two Guvnors Owain Arthur at the Bluebird Centenary Celebrations

On Tuesday 12th June the Haymarket in the heart of London’s West End came to a standstill as tourists and enthusiasts flocked to see a stunning exhibition of the world famous Bluebird vehicles outside the Theatre Royal Haymarket; the very theatre that inspired Sir Malcolm Campbell to begin the Bluebird legend exactly a century ago.

Christened ‘Bluebird’ after Maurice Maeterlinck’s play ‘The Blue Bird’ staged at the theatre in 1912, six of the iconic world record breaking cars and boats, including Sir Malcolm’s original ‘Blue Bird’, came together for the first time in history as part of a special day to pay tribute to the inspirational Campbell family. Sir Malcolm’s grandchildren and record breakers in their own right Don Wales and Gina Campbell were present at the Centenary Celebrations, which included the reveal of the new Bluebird GTL Formula E Racing Car and a free talk in the theatre’s historic auditorium about Bluebird past, present and future.

Kara McCulloch of the Theatre Royal Haymarket said, “We are delighted to have played a part in this wonderful Centenary Celebration of Sir Malcolm Campbell’s extraordinary achievements. The Theatre Royal Haymarket’s staging of Maeterlinck’s ‘play ‘Blue Bird,’ inspired not only Sir Malcolm Campbell to strive for success but also his family to continue the legend today. Over 2000 people were able to share this special day with us as we celebrated, together with the Ritz London, the absolute best of British.”
